The Pope's Revenge
An unintended feature of the TV Tower became a source of amusement for West Berliners and a quiet embarrassment for the East German government. The tower was built as a symbol of the GDR's technological prowess and its state-enforced atheism. However, when the sun shines on the sphere's 140 stainless steel facets, the reflection forms a luminous cross.
This phenomenon was quickly dubbed "Rache des Papstes," or the "Pope's Revenge," an ironic twist for a regime that suppressed religion. Today, the gleaming cross remains a beloved quirk of the Berlin skyline, a symbol of the city's complex and often contradictory history, visible from miles away on a clear day.
